Es Verdad, Nací Rebelde is inspired by Andean ceramics with heads and Irene Silverblatt’s Moon, Sun, and Witches: Gender Ideologies and Class in Inca and Colonial Peru, exploring how women who fought to preserve their culture were labeled as rebels. Stickwomen dancing and holding hands symbolize the Andean tradition of intergenerational power flowing from elder to younger women—an egalitarian lineage disrupted by colonization, which vilified these women as witches. The piece celebrates the enduring strength of my heritage, the power of community, and the cultural memory preserved by Andean artists like Guaman Poma.
